Founded on August 4 in 1863 the Civic Body in Malegaon is one of the oldest in Maharashtra state. Though the 1872 Census Report gives the total population of Malegaon Sub Division that included 141 villages at that time as 66,956, the town according to the 1883 Nasik District Gazetteer alone had a population of 10, 624 in 1881. The major chunk of the population were involved in weaving Grey Cloth and Cotton Carpets. The raw materials needed for the local textile industry, that was still in an emerging state, were brought from nearby and sometimes faraway cities. The weavers in Malegaon were paying Octroi on the raw materials. Along with the House Tax it was the main source of income for the Civic Body.
